The United States launched the first communication satellite in history. It was called SCORE. Its main mission was to test a communications relay system in space. It also broadcasted Christmas message from US president Dwight D. Eisenhower. The launch vehicle was the Atlas rocket, later used for delivering first American astronauts to orbit.
