He invented the float-feed carburetor in which fuel was vaporized by passing it through the jet as a fine spray and mixed with air to produce a combustible mixture for the engine. He also designed the first Mercedes car for Daimler. Later he designed motors for Zeppelin airships. After the war, he started his own brand of automobiles.
