Sir David Lean, CBE was a British film director, producer, screenwriter and editor, responsible for large-scale epics such as The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. He also directed adaptations of Charles Dickens novels Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, as well as the romantic drama Brief Encounter.
